Ever wanted to be the coolest person in town? Well, you can..... with self-storage. Fine wines and classic cars never went so good together. Collecting can be fun. For some, collecting can be just a couple and for others it can be quite a few. Make some friends and enjoy great times!

As far as classic cars, I have three. Fortunately, I am able to store them at home and drive them simply by walking out out to the garage. Not everybody is so lucky to have extra garage space at home. For the many others, there is self-storage.

I have seen people store their classic car in a unit, drive their daily driver to the unit and then head out to the car show or cruise around. Sometimes its the weekend and other times its just for the day or evening. So much so that there are self-storage facilities being built to cater to these clients. Some of these specialized units come with lifts and restrooms along with balconies and a centralized conference room for their car club meetings. It's a more costly build. That's an entire new level and certainly it works for the areas that have the demand. On a more standard side, you might decide to offer an area with heat for Winter storage of vehicles or climate control and need to provide ample surveillance for the area. However is may just be a larger standard drive-up unit. Do your research before building.

As far as a standard storge facility, be sure your lease is written to include specific measures involving the storage of motorized vehicles. Safety is important and you want to be sure battery chargers and repair of vehicles doesn't become an issue. An unattended battery charger can catch fire and cause a fire at your facility and nobody wants that to happen.

Uncork this great option for your self-storage. Wine storage is unique and not offered at every facility. It doesn't consume a large area and you must be sure you are in the right area to offer such a unique service. You will need to accommodate the wines to ensure their integrity and safety of the collections.

Considerations to offer wine storage are:

  1. Climate Control: Wine needs to be stored at a consistent temperature

  2. Humidity: Ideal humidity for wine storage is around 60-70%. A good wine storage facility will offer humidity control.

  3. Light: Wine should be kept away from light, especially direct sunlight, as UV rays can degrade the wine.

  4. Vibration: Wine should be stored in a place free from vibrations, as constant movement can disturb the wine's sediment and alter its aging process.

  5. Position: Store wine bottles on their sides to keep the cork moist, preventing it from drying out and allowing air to seep in.

  6. Security: Wine collections can be valuable, so ensure the self-storage facility has strong security measures.

  7. Insurance: Consider insuring your wine collection. Some self-storage facilities offer insurance, or you can get a policy specifically for your collection.

  8. Labeling and Inventory: Keep an inventory of your wines and label the boxes clearly. This will help you track what you have and ensure nothing gets lost or misplaced.

Just remember, too many isn't really too many for a collection. At least that is what I say, when it comes to classic cars. No matter what your collection is, have fun with it and maybe you can meet more collectors by offering this service at your self storage facility. "Cheers!"
